“Keep your hands to yourself.”

It was a simple direction, but not one that I could follow easily when it came to who was sitting in front of me. The girl who gave me feelings I never had experienced before…feelings I didn’t know how to deal with.

I waited till the fun ruiner turned her back to stick out my tongue.

Next, I used this opportunity to return to the task at hand; bothering the girl who sat in front of me. My weapon of choice: my hands.

I took two large handfuls of her soft hair and yanked.

“Stop!” She reprimanded me as she turned to face me. Her eyes wide, her face flushed, her nostrils flaring. Yes, you could say she was mad. Mad at me. But, I finally had caught her attention, and I wanted to hold onto it for as long as I could.

As soon as she turned back around in her seat, I pulled her hair again. This time, a little harder.

At first, I winced, because even I felt the pain. In my hands were strands of her hair I’d ripped out.

She screamed.

Feeling remorseful, but not wanting to let her know it, I laughed heartily.

She let out an exasperated breath and turned around so her body was facing me. Her eyes were filled with tears, but she glowered at me with her little sapphires sparkling into my eyes. In this moment, I had never liked this girl so much. I had pushed her a little too far. I hurt her. But as pretty and as sweet as she was, she was strong.

And now she hated me. The thought warmed my ears to a deep red.

Fun ruiner turned around abruptly and yelled out my name. Soon, twenty-two eyes were on me. I stood up without being told. I knew where I was to be sent- a place I knew well. The only place in a place like this for misbehavers.

But to me, it was already well worth it.

The girl who could make my heart sky rocket off the ground had looked at me. In all her fury, she was still absolutely stunning. Prettier than all the dolls I’d seen my little sister play with. No, this girl was something else. She was true beauty- the kind that is so good on the inside that it can’t help but show on the outside.

If pulling her hair was the only way I’d get her attention, I’d be committed to doing it every day I had with her.

And I did for the next few years, until one day.
